THE RACE

TO SAVE ONE OF THE LAST

GREAT WILD SALMON RUNS

In 2019 an enormous rock slide devastated the summer's salmon run on the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada - blocking tens of millions of fish from making their way home to spawn. Already threatened stocks were on the brink.

In 2020, during the global pandemic, a massive effort was underway to save the runs from extinction. SAFE PASSAGE explores the importance of wild salmon and offers an in-depth look at the efforts taking place to ensure that this historic run survives.

The impacts of these efforts have long lasting implications. Indigenous communities are inexplicably linked to the sustenance and symbolism of the salmon. Struggling killer whale populations depend on these runs. Bears, eagles, and the ecosystem rely on the nurturing nutrients of the spawn. And a booming commercial and recreational fishing industry hangs in the balance. Life throughout the Pacific Northwest depends on these wild salmon—from Washington State to Alaska and the entire West Coast of Canada—a future without these fish seems unthinkable.

The historical, cultural, ecological, and economic impact of this ancient run is presented in a variety of first-person narratives. The tone is one of urgency and hope that efforts on the Fraser River may set an example for recovery for other salmon runs around the world.

Working directly with the Canadian government and others to develop strict Covid-19 protocols allowed production to take place throughout the current pandemic. Special permits issued from the Canadian government allowed Warner Hanson crews to enter Canada from the U.S. and they were deemed essential in order to tell this important story.
